Premium Upload: Rare C.P.E.Bach oratorio: The Israelites in the Desert

This is the first posting of two, each with an oratorio by Carl
Philipp Emanuel Bach. This is the larger of the two, his Wq238, Die
Israeliten in der Wüste (The Israelites in the Desert).

It was broadcast on Sunday last, 9 January 2008, by the German
classical station NDR Kultur, and for once the satellite signal
behaved itself in exemplary fashion.

As to the performance, it could perhaps have had a greater sense of
urgency - being lost in the desert can't be much fun at the best of
times. But what do I know?

For those of you with an interest in such matters, Wikipedia have a
piece on C.P.E.Bach
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Philipp_Emanuel_Bach) and indeed on
the oratorio itself
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Israeliten_in_der_W%C3%BCste).

The oratorio is interesting insofar as it provided a bridge between
conventional church performance and the new secular performances in
concert venues that were coming into vogue in the last quarter of the
eighteenth century.

This performance was recorded at the St. Michaeliskirche, Hamburg, on
November 3 2007.

The Chor St. Michaelis Hamburg and Dresdner Barockorchester are joined
by Cornelia Samuelis and Bettina Pahn (sopranos),Jörg Dürmüller
(tenor) and Marcus Niedermeyr (bass), all led by Christoph Schoener.

The Oratorio has 28 numbers - recitatives, arias, choruses etc. I've
made separate tracks for each number, converted them to mp3 (320kbs)
and flac, bundled them into a couple of enormous zip files (using
7-zip), and partitioned them with hjsplit.

Premium Upload: Another rare C.P.E.Bach oratorio: Musik am Dankfeste

Here's the second helping of the illustrious Carl Philipp Emanuel
Bach's oratorios, the full title of which is Musik am Dankfeste wegen
des fertigen Michaelis-Thurms mit dem Chor Heilig", H823. This is
only it's second performance too, the first being back 1786, as part
of the inaugural celebrations for the recently built church. The place
burned to the ground in 1906.

Quite how the work was rediscovered I don't know. Some of you may
be able to fill us in on some of the details. One interesting detail is
that C.P.E. Bach was Hamburg's director of music for twenty years, and
as such master of the music at Hamburger hauptkirche St. Michaelis, a
post held by the conductor featured here, Christoph Schoener.

Anyway, this is a recording of that momentous event in 2004 at St.
Michael's in Hamburg (October 29 to be precise), the opening concert
of that year's Hamburger Bachfest - the 79th.

Cornelia Samuelis (soprano), Elisabeth Graf (alto), Marcus Ullmann
(tenor) and Klaus Häger (bass) join the Chor St. Michaelis,
Johann Christian Bach-Akademie playing original instruments, under the
baton of Christoph Schoener.

The piece lasts about 28 minutes. Since it's been impossible to find
out the names of the different numbers, I've uploaded it in one chunk
rather than splitting it into tracks without names. If any of you have
the names of the individual parts, it would be great to get them.

Here is an upload from various OOP cds representing the art of the
German organist, Professor Michael Schneider (1909-1994). I remember
hearing the lps of these works for many years and have always valued
Schneider's musicianship. It's my understanding that this was not the
repertoire he was best known for, but it is all I have of him on record.
